It’s taken me hours to write my review for this but I still don’t think I can put all my thoughts and feelings into words properly, but this was genuinely nothing short of a masterpiece. The contrast going from the dark, cruel prison to the lively, bright technicolor world of _Kiss of the Spider Woman_ is so striking, both visually and metaphorically, it really does feel like 2 completely separate worlds. The performances from the three leads (Tonatiuh, Diego Luna, Jennifer Lopez) were so incredible and nuanced, easily some of my the best performances I’ve ever seen. And the chemistry between Tonatiuh and Diego is so raw and leaves such a bittersweet feeling because you can feel their love for each other through the screen (even when they weren’t admitting it to each other) but you know ultimately they won’t get the beautiful, happy ending they deserve. By the end of the film I was in tears and almost in hysterics, and the final shot and line broke me and healed me at the same time. Now I have to talk about what everyone’s talking about, Jennifer Lopez. We all know she’s an icon and talented performer and actor (even if you won’t admit it to yourself) but she’s on another level in this role, she fully turned into the character(s) of Aurora/Ingrid Luna/Spider Woman. She deserves every bit of praise she’s been getting and then some. I know it probably won’t, but this movie truly deserves to sweep this awards season. Not only is it one of the greatest films of the decade, it’s a bold, audacious statement that’s so important in to share in these bleak times around the world. I adore everything about this movie and I better see both Tonatiuh and Jennifer Lopez get Oscar nominations otherwise I’m gonna get violent! Everyone needs to go see this movie on the big screen as soon as possible, it seriously is one of the greatest movies I have ever seen in my entire life and my personal movie of the year.
